Handcrafted canoe company launches out of Rock Island
A company that makes handcrafted canoes has set up shop in downtown Rock Island, near the banks of the Mississippi River. Bruce and Sue Peterson, of Rock Island, bought Navarro Canoe Co. in Minnesota last fall and relocated it to a former motorcycle shop at 2219 3rd Ave., Rock Island.

Ask Bruce or Sue Peterson what sets their Navarro canoes apart, and both will be quick to tell you, "Wood." "It's the wood that sets us apart," says Bruce. "We have six different designs, six models, and you get different performance out of them all, but there are a lot of high-tech canoes on the market. It's when you climb into it and see it — that's a totally different experience.

RI's Blues Brothers get full makeover
From the showroom window at Navarro Canoe Co. just before Easter, a resurrected Jake Blues sat mutely, perhaps contemplating his shiny new life. His taller brother Elwood sat in limbo -- his face covered in green tape, clothes mostly in a white primer -- in Navarro's shop at 2219 3rd Ave., just a few blocks east of where the life-size replicas of the famous Blues Brothers endured years of indignities (natural and man-made), befitting a gritty blues song.
